Are all replacement windows the same?

Did you know

Some window ads claiming low prices say insulated glass and it is only two panes of glass with nothing else. To be energy efficient and get energy tax credits you need an insulating gas between the panes along with a low-E coating on the glass. The various gases help insulate from the hot and cold temperatures and low-E reflects the sun's heat and damaging rays. This along with other factors like the construction and materials of the frame determine the overall efficiency of the window. The measure of thermal performance of the whole window is called the U-factor. The lower the number the more efficient the window is. The whole U-factor or U-value of the window is the only form of measurement accepted by the Department of Energy when determining weather the windows qualify for the Energy Star label.
